Thousands of North Country kids have made that yellow-bus pilgrimage to see the State Museum in Albany. It’s also a resource for our region’s many history buffs.
And the museum often features our region’s culture and landscapes, including the current “Not Just Another Pretty Place” exhibition.
But the Albany Times-Union is reporting that the State Museum is getting hit by budget woes just like every other governmental institution.
That vulnerability, people familiar with the facility’s finances say, led to a decision earlier this month to lay off 26 workers and, for the first time since 1976, close the museum to the public on Sunday.

A far larger concern to me is the fact Congress and NY State are withholding funding for HEAP type programs- and winter isn’t even here yet. This is a far more serious issue than the museum.
Sad but cuts do need to be made.
The problems we now have might not have occurred if we hadn’t gone into the “money is no object” mindset which resulted in government and individuals spending beyond their incomes.
