Grocery stores are one of the indicators of a healthy small town. It’s such an important indicator, that health officials actually track which communities don’t have access to affordable, nutritious food.
So it’s always tough news when we hear that another grocery has shut down — the latest in Crown Point in the Champlain Valley. This from Lohr McKinstry at the Plattsburgh Press-Republican.
This community’s only full-service grocery store is falling victim to the closing of the Champlain Bridge. John and Marion Sullivan of Vergennes, Vt., have operated Crown Point Discount Grocery for the last eight years.
This closure isn’t as hard-hitting as some. Ticonderoga, roughly ten miles away, has a full-service Wal-Mart. But for low-income families, and people without dependable cars, that can be a haul.
