Morning Read: Killing bin Laden
Northern New York has paid a heavy price since 9/11. Local communities lost family members in the initial terror attack.
The wars that followed in Afghanistan and Iraq have killed dozens more, and disrupted the lives of hundreds of families as National Guardsmen and Fort Drum soldiers shipped out.
Reaction to news of Osama bin Laden’s death came swiftly. This from the Watertown Daily Times:
“It’s about time,” said Zachariah P. Zeitler, 30, a night auditor at Holiday Inn Express on Arsenal Street in Watertown. The Manhattan native was living on the Upper East Side during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The Plattsburgh Press-Republican, meanwhile, led with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s reaction to the news.
In a statement released in the hours after President Barack Obama announced bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan by U.S. troops, Cuomo called the death “a historic moment that represents a major step in our country’s efforts to defeat terrorism around the world.”
So here’s your chance to chime in. What do you think about this development? A major turning point? A significant blow to Al Quaeda? Your comments welcome.
It’s about time.
The Canadian PM said he felt a sense of “somber satisfaction”. I think that sums up my feelings as well.
I am amazed at the capability and execution by the special forces. So this makes me proud of our military and our President and it is good that we have accomplished what is a military victory.
I find the celebrations and chanting kind of off base though, for some reason it seems creepy to me, I don’t know why?
Yes, the celebration and chanting is creepy. It’s not a sporting event. And even if it was, I’m not sure we’d be ahead on the scoreboard.
And as for all the praise for Obama, I think he took a _huge_ risk and was very lucky. I’m not sure I would praise him for that decision, but I’m glad it worked out.
