Keeping us young in St. Lawrence County
This morning we reported, from the Associated Press, that New York as a whole is aging (median 38 last year, 35.9 ten years ago) and that rural counties are pushing the average up. Hamilton County is the oldest, median age 51.3 years.
OK, OK. I’m a baby boomer, doing my share to push MY county into the upper brackets too. But it doesn’t feel like that here in Canton. Or neighboring Potsdam either. These are college towns, and I’m continually thankful for the value the colleges add to our lives here, culturally and socially. They’re keeping us young.
Thanks to our alert PR friend Mike Griffin at Clarkson University, we now have another measure of our higher ed neighbors’ worth. According to the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, St. Lawrence County is among nine New York counties with the highest concentration of employment and wages in private education. And that’s just the private schools: St. Lawrence in Canton and Clarkson in Potsdam. Not even counting SUNY Potsdam or SUNY Canton.
St. Lawrence County – “The Cradle of Education”
I think that sounds better than “Fish Capital”.
We are lucky to have great schools. My family has taken advantage of the local colleges. Three at SUNY Potsdam and one at Clarkson.
As a pre baby boomer, I might be aging some but I’ll be damned if I ever grow up or wait for the hearse to show up by retiring.
Sorry I’ve been away gang, in laws moved in, Alzhimers issues. Anyway, Martha, regarding this quote- “According to the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, St. Lawrence County is among nine New York counties with the highest concentration of employment and wages in private education.” That to me sounds more like the wealth is concentrated at Clarkson and SLU. Could you maybe provide a link that explains their meaning?
Guess not, huh?
