Morning Read: Sampling some lux in the Dacks

The Montreal Gazette has posted an envy-inspiring write-up of The Point, the posh-rustic resort on Upper Saranac Lake.

Packing for a trip to the countryside, I laid out my most chic evening ensemble and mother’s pearls. Jean-Pierre prepped his dinner jacket, bow-tie and cummerbund. Perhaps you are wondering what sort of wilderness destination calls for fancy dress?

It’s not to everyone’s taste, but a weekend on “the other side” of the Adirondacks wouldn’t exactly stink, right?

Life here is a round of amuses-bouches, spit-roasted barbecues, pleasurable picnics, decadent lunches and gastronomic dinners. World-class chefs create artful presentations of delicacies like quail with foie gras, tenderloin of beef with onion marmalade, Asian miso cod, lobster ravioli and braised lamb.

The article notes that if you have to ask how much it costs, then it’s…well, you know the rest.

As I prepare my own luncheon of Ramen noodles and leftover chicken, I shall tip my glass (okay, my bottle of Diet Pepsi) to all my fellow In Box bon-vivants.

    Whatever.
Having money is one thing. Being impressed by it (yours or someone else’s) is a bit of a drag.
I had the good fortune (I think) to have hung out with some rich kids from Grosse Point when in High School and learned it’s nice but ain’t no big thing.
One of my friends family were members of the yacht club and I got to sail around Lake St.Clair on a 28 ft folk boat with him. I thought he was cool because when he was invited the Coming Out party for Charlotte M. Ford, he, at his mother’s insistence, dressed in his tux but instead of going to the party, came over and played poker with a group of us lesser people.
I guess if you like to be impressed or try to impress, that is what you do. Otherwise you are content to be a working stiff no matter how much you have.

I don’t know many people who would not be impressed by excessive wealth or power. The newspaper is just writing to that audience.

The Point has an impressive past and an interesting clientele.

And who reported on George and Laura going for a bike ride at bloomingdale bog last summer?

I plan on going for a hike there soon, but that is not very newsworthy is it? Why is that?

It can’t be all that plush if they let you brings dogs. Pretty expensive kennel!

    Mary,
Sorry. Never been impressed by either wealth or power. Never wanted either. Too much of an aggravation.
To me, any house you can clean by yourself within an hour is too big.

I stayed at a fancy ADK resort once. A couple of pretty young girls came to my room in the evening and asked me if I wanted “turn down service”.

No thanks, I’ve been turned down enough that it isn’t that much fun anymore.
