We’re focusing this month on Farmers Under 40, so it was perfect timing to point out this article.
Federal Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack has said the nation needs 100,000 new farmers, and some folks think Congress will need to tinker with the Farm Bill next year to make that happen.
Tune in to NCPR for stories about young farmers in the North Country, and about efforts to lobby for new beginning in the 2012 Farm Bill. And you can catch up with all our of reporting in the series, including more resources and web links at this page.

Farmers over fifty need a good farm bill too!
I wonder exactly what a “good” farm bill would look like? Myself, I’d like to see an end to subsidies as we know them, an end to the antiquated milk pricing structure and some major work on defining the direction we want to head.
I don’t think a darn thing is going to change, not one little thing.
I’m with Brett. I think very little will change in the next farm bill except perhaps the Ethanol subsidy will be dramatically cut (finally….It’s long over due!). The same corporate interests who currently benefit tremendously will do everything in their power to continue the status quo. And the small family farmer will continue to suffer as a result.
That may well happen Clap. But watch the fallout. All those guys in the corn belt that bought new land and equipment due to gov’t meddling are gonna be in the hurt locker. Their fault for not thinking, but gov’ts fault too for messing with markets.
