Adirondack Museum hires new director

The Blue Mountain Lake-based Adirondack Museum announced a few minutes ago that it is hiring a new executive director from California to lead the institution.

Kevin J. Arquit, Chairman of the Board of the Adirondack Museum announced today that the Board of Trustees has unanimously
confirmed the appointment of David M. Kahn as the new Executive Director.

“The Board was very fortunate to identify Kahn as the museums next
Director,” said Arquit.

“This is an exciting time for the Adirondack Museum to bring in someone as accomplished as David because he has devoted his entire career to the museum profession.  His skills, experience, and passion for history will undoubtedly continue to move the museum forward as a rich cultural resource and intellectually engaging place.”

Kahn is a native New Yorker and a veteran museum administrator.  He comes on line at a challenging time for museums like the one in Blue Mountain Lake.

Outdoor museums are struggling to build and maintain attendance, and they also  face cuts in state and Federal funding.

According to the museum’s announcement, Kahn had a strong track record while leding the Connecticut Historical Society, where he built the “operating budget…from $1.7
million to $5 million and the institution quadrupled its audience to 70,000.”

    Interesting.
Kahn previously served as director of the Louisiana State Museum, the Connecticut Historical Society and the Brooklyn Historical Society prior to joining SDHC. A native of New York he will now be returning to his home state to be closer to his family.
