As reported earlier, Jack Layton is to have a state funeral in Toronto on Saturday, an honor usually reserved for Prime Ministers, sitting cabinet ministers and Governors General.
This is the first state funeral in Canada for the leader of the opposition. (But then again, dying while serving in that capacity is also a sad first.)
Prior to Saturday, Layton will also lie in state on Parliament Hill. His casket is expected to arrive there around 10:30 am this morning.
CBC reports members of the public may pay their respects from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
