Go to National Geographic’s website today and you’ll find a stunning photograph of Saturn’s moons — and an electrifying image of Saranac Lake’s Ice Palace taken by Mark Kurtz. It’s the magazine’s “Photo of the Day.”

And here I was complaining about the chilly weather this past weekend. I say, February: Bring it on.
Gorgeous picture.
Great photo Mark.
I was there watching these fireworks in the midst of heavy snow fall – it truly was an amazing experience and this is an amazing photo.
cool photo
A lesson learned, actually, re-learned: don’t go to something with preconceived ideas. I was expecting a certain kind of image not unlike what I had shot at this particular event before. The first couple of shots looked overexposed and I tried making some changes with my camera settings to get the black sky with rich color in the palace that I was expecting… and I wasn’t getting it. The heavy snowfall changed the whole scene and I eventually adjusted (in my mind) for what was going on. In the end, the first images I shot that looked “overexposed” were actually the ones that caught the sense of that evening. This is one of those first images. Always be open for surprises!
Great photo and good advice, Mark…but don’t forget to add that remembering to bring a very large umbrella (and two assistants to hold it) was crucial to get that kind of shot in the heavy snow. :-)
