Elizabeth Grant, the Lake Placid phenom who has reinvented herself as pop singer Lana Del Rey, hit the uber-big time over the weekend, when she performed on Saturday Night Live.
The appearance drew generally hostile reviews, with Atlantic Magazine suggesting gently that Ms. Del Rey “had a bit of an off night.”
I’d have to agree, though there are moments when Del Rey’s voice shows some of the gin-and-whiskey texture that has attracted so much attention to her latter-day torch stylings.
Check out the discussion and the video clips here. Comments welcome, but remember all you hipsters, keep it civil.

I had never heard her sing before and found the appearance on SNL to be absolutely awful…she looked like she was terrified and had a lot of nervous repetitive gestures…I thought perhaps her mike wasn’t on since I could not hear a word she was singing and once I did hear her sing something, it was a strong voice with no distinct words… so what happened?????…Once she did smile every so briefly and it was like she was afraid to smile in case she would be out of “character”. I had to ask myself what was all the buzz about her being the next Lady Gaga or some such?….must have a great PR team!
I didn’t see it, but it must have been pretty bad if you have to warn people to be civil when you welcome comments.
Still, being on SNL is a pretty big deal.
The next Lady Gaga? Why would a legitimate musician want such a comparison anyway? Don’t we have enough talentless “pop stars” now?
Don’t get me wrong, if this girl can actually sing and has talent, good for her. I just hope she’s striving to be something greater.
never heard of her before. havent seen snl since betty white hosted and dont plan on seeing it again. snl has had plenty of bad performances and most of their skits are unentertaining as well. all part of the “vast national wasteland” that is contemporary television programming, i suppose.
