So it’s been a tough year for skiers, of the downhill and x-country variety, but over the weekend I managed to get out twice. First, I spent a great half day poking along the Raquette River, taking these photographs near the Hemlock Hill lean-to. I also skied on Chapel Pond and Osgood Pond near Paul Smiths College, where I followed in the hoofsteps of two gorgeous white-tail deer. As the rain sets in today, I hope you had a chance to grab some snow and sunshine. (Corrected: thanks, Walker)

“Oseetah Lake near Paul Smiths College?” I’m guessing you mean Osgood Pond near Paul Smiths College?
Didn’t get the skis out, but enjoyed a beautiful crisp walk on both Saturday and Sunday. You just can’t beat a sunny day in January. Except with two consecutive sunny days in January….
lots of debris on the trails – I kept worrying about my skis
My skis are ancient and cruddy anyway. That said, I bought my son $400 new skate skis this year and he snapped them his second day. Ugh.

Brian,
As are my skis. I bought them 13 years ago for maybe $75 bucks brand new and they still serve my needs. My condolences on the loss of your son’s skis. Ouch! I feel your pain…..
Even more painful to me, however, is that with this mild winter weather, I have yet to ski once and we’re nearing February. I never thought I’d have that problem here in the North Country.
It was a great week – weekend to be outdoors. Snowshoeing, Snowmobiling, Ice Fishing….. all good!
This ice we have in places is the death of racing skis. Sorry Brian. I spent several racing seasons training on the lakes due to lack of snow in the eighties. This year we also have lack of cold which is big problem!
Brian, get your son some of those ice blades with cc bindings on them. With poles it is just like being on skis on the ice. Very fun. Good conditioning.
But watch out for thin ice I have fallen through several times and lived to tell the tale. I don’t want your son to do that!
Brian, also if you bought the skis at High Peaks (or wherever) talk to Brian Delaney maybe you can get the company to get you a matching ski for not much money. The factory can usually do that.
2 lessons here, related; 1, have pair of beaters and 2, ski as soon as there’s enough snow on said beaters as it’s likely to vanish quickly this year!
I have several pairs of wood skis, some beaters some not…and I have added a $20 pair of nice second hand fishscales for warm days. But not even they will get me out on my bare lawn today!
