Commissioner King: new, smaller Common Core forums
New York’s Education Commissioner John King announced on Friday that he’ll be holding 12 smaller forums around the state on the new Common Core curriculum.
Two of those forums will be held in the North Country: one in Schroon Lake, and a televised forum in Plattsburgh. The Department of Education says it will finalize the forum schedule next week.
This all comes after King was heavily criticized last week for cancelling the first round of forums after a meeting in Poughkeepsie got a little ugly.
Here’s what he said in a press release:
“I want to have a respectful, direct, and constructive dialogue with parents…We want the conversation to rise above all the noise and make sure parents understand the Common Core, and, just as important, we want to understand parents’ concerns. We all share the same goal: to make sure our students have the skills and knowledge to be successful in a changing world.”Here’s an interesting take on the whole thing. Meanwhile the debate over Common Core is heating up nationwide. PolitiFact published this fact check about criticisms of Common Core in Forida.
What does the new curriculum mean for you? What you say to Commissioner King about the new standards?

It’s the right thing for him to do ,to come out as alot of parents have real concerns over what is being taught to their children ,It.s not so much that they’re against it but they don’t understand just what the cirriculum is and about. The article said he’d be meeting around the state but I didn’t see any mention of St. Lawrence Cty, Jefferson or Franklin ,Were we forgotten about or we just don’t count.?
I assume they are going to do background checks before the one in Plattsburgh to ensure that no “undesirable elements” get admitted and disturb the fake consensus.
Much like with Emperor Andrew’s rigging of the gambling referendum, the process can often make people suspicious even before they get a chance to ponder the content of an issue.
Brian,
I don’t know what the first forum was like, but it is extremely annoying to go to meeting/forums to get information like this when people show up with the intent to disturb, shout and be disrespectful. If you want to protest, protest outside. Don’t disrupt the meeting.
Commissioner King:
Please learn the definition of dialogue.
I guess I wonder what the purpose is though? Is there a promise of changing the common core based on these so called discussions? Is it mainly just informational, here is what this is and then trying to answer questions about a decision that has already been made?
In general I find today’s community forums, town hall meetings, etc to be useless and done in large part for show.
CJ: So there’s a difference between dialogue and monologue?
