More on shrinking the North Country’s big government

Here’s how Queensbury supervisor Dan Stec described it to the Glens Falls Post Star:

“We are not going to close this budget gap without breaking some eggs.”

The newspaper is reporting today on Warren County’s plan to ax seventeen jobs in the next budget — and to slash funding to non-profits that draw income from the county.

Total savings: $920,000.

The Post Star’s article provides another great snapshot of how the region’s government-heavy economy is being reshaped by the economic crisis.

Governor David Paterson also announced a plan this week to slash $500,000,000 from state programs, with SUNY campuses and state prisons taking the biggest hit.

What do you think? Necessary belt-tightening? Inevitable? Or a dangerous blow to a region with unemployment already in double digits?
