Driving alert
The Ottawa area experienced heavy fog this morning. Visibility was so poor that several clusters of collisions occurred on the 416 north bound between the Roger Stevens and Bankfield exits. Media outlets report approximately 70 cars either collided or ended up in the ditch.
No deaths or serious injuries have been reported at present. CBC reports 4 were taken to hospital. (CTV says that number was 5.)
As of noon, CBC radio’s live report indicated provincial police had most of the cars removed and anticipated the north bound lanes may reopen “soon”. However, the south bound lanes of the 416 at Fallowfield road were also closed to remove a tractor trailer.
Motorists traveling into or out of Ottawa via the 416 should monitor radio reports and be prepared for possible detours or delays until all lanes are cleared and reopened. And drive with caution!
