Press-Republican: Ticonderoga ferry closed by ice jam

The transportation crisis in the Champlain valley just got a little worse.

The Plattsburgh Press-Republican is reporting this afternoon that the car ferry at Ticonderoga has been shut down by ice jams.

With temperatures expected to remain in the single digits through the weekend, it’s unclear whether the ferry will be able to resume operation this winter.

The Ticonderoga crossing became a staple for many drivers after the Crown Point bridge was closed due to safety concerns in mid-October.

The ferry service has already been extended beyond its usual shut-down date in November.

Speaking with the Press-Republican, Moriah town supervisor Tom Scozzafava said the Ticonderoga ferry was “critical to commuters.”

Until service is restored, motorists will have to drive north to the ferry crossing at Essex or south to Whitehall, adding more than an hour to their commute.

State Department of Transportation officials are scrambling to open a year-round ferry crossing at Crown Point that would operate until a new bridge is built.
