Giuliani Watch: GOP poised to let the big one get away?
The New York Daily News is reporting that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is preparing to bow out of the 2010 political season.
No run for governor, no run for US Senator, no run period, despite consistent polls showing him with a sizable advantage over most Democrats.
According to the DN, Giuliani will endorse Rick Lazio, the man who stepped into Rudy’s shoes once before, in the Senate contest against Hillary Rodham Clinton
[T]he former mayor has decided to stay in the private sector, where he will continue his work as a security consultant, a sometimes TV commentator and, increasingly, a celebrity draw on the GOP fund-raising circuit.
It’s easier and far more lucrative for conservative luminaries to work the celebrity-book-deal-pundit-world.
It’s also safer for politicians with complicated backgrounds, which Giuliani has in spades.
There’s some speculation that Giuliani could still be cultivating a 2012 presidential bid, but that’s a big stretch at this point.
The Daily News opines that this decision effectively ends Giulani’s career in elected office.
All of which leaves the Republican Party in New York with, well, Rick Lazio. To bounce back big in 2010, the GOP will need strong recruiting.
If the Daily News is right, this isn’t a great start.
