Adirondack health restricts visitors to protect newborns from flu

In a slightly scary press release today, Adirondack Health says it’s taking precautions after a recent area outbreak of flu and flu-like illnesses by ” restricting visitors” to the Stafford New Life birthing center at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.

Babies are among the most vulnerable groups for the flu, so only parents and grandparents who’ve been vaccinated against the flu are being allowed to visit the center; and people who are experiencing sings of illness (you know who you are) are being asked not to come.

    My wife was at the doctors’ office the other day, and encountered a nurse wearing a protective surgical facemask… only to find out the office policy is: any staff member opting out of the flu vaccine must wear the mask – I guess as long as he or she is on duty – until the flu season abates. In my opinion, I’d rather have the shot – but I’m sure everybody has their own reasons…

    Surprised to hear that a doctor would hire a nurse who refused the flu vaccine to work in his/her office. I’d probably reconsider my choice of doctor.
