Ted Cruz: Canadian no more
Well, it took long enough, but Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has officially shed his pesky Canadian citizenship.
Political wonks and dedicated In Box readers already know being born in Canada had come back to haunt this possible presidential contender. As was widely reported across the U.S. and in Canada earlier this week, Cruz’s renunciation became official on May 14th.
Some have wondered aloud what took him so long? Here’s a riff on that theme from the Globe and Mail back in January:
Listen, if you want to forfeit your right to a Canadian passport, and distance yourself from this land of socialized medicine, gay marriage and gun control, we understand. But, future former citizen, what’s the hold up? As one immigration lawyer said: “Unless there’s a security issue that hasn’t been disclosed, unless there’s a mental health issue that hasn’t been disclosed, there’s no reason for anything other than a lickety-split process to occur.”
Before you act, listen to Conrad Black, who offered you this sage advice: “He’s making a mistake; he’ll never go higher in the U.S. electoral system than he is now, and Canada’s a better governed country than the U.S.”
Another January article in The Wire also asked why something relatively simple could drag out so long and offered some theories on possible reasons for the delay.
Whatever the real back story, the deed is now done. The final document that made it so can be seen on this Dallas News website.

“unless there’s a mental health issue…”
Of course; he thinks he’s an American.
You can take the boy out of Canada, but you can’t take Canada out of the boy.
How can Dom Quieted Cruz solve the immigration problems of the United States, if he cannot solve his own personal immigration problems in a timely manner?
It’s too bad. I’d be more likely to vote for a Canadian than a Republican from Texas…
35 million Canadians are collectively saying you can have him, no take backs!
Sage? advice from Conrad Black? Ted Cruz and people like him are a large part of the reason US politics are so dysfunctional. Ted Cruz couldn’t even be elected mayor of Toronto.
I’m sure Canada is relieved.
