Saranac Lake makes Top-200 Sportsmen list for best towns

Outdoor Life magazine — one of the top journals for hunters and fishers in the US  — has ranked Saranac Lake at 140 on its Top-200 list of best towns in the US.

The ranking includes measures of fishable and huntable species, and the proximity to publicly-open land and water.  On all counts, Saranac Lake ranks high.

“It’s very positive, although there’s no real way to calculate exactly what the economic impact of being on a list like this is,” Saranac Lake chamber of commerce director Sylvie Nelson told WNBZ.

“But the thing is, it shows Saranac Lake in a very positive light, it also targets the people that Saranac Lake is a good fit for. We’ll probably see an influx of people specifically related to this list.”

There is some legitimate grumbling on them magazine’s readers that Burlington VT made the grade, but Plattsburgh NY didn’t.

“I believe that Plattsburg, NY should be the bass capital for Lake Champlain rather than Burlington, Vt,” wrote Mechant 55.  “Plattsburg sits on the west shore of Lake Champlain, has all the attributes of the lake as described, and it hosts more tournaments than its sister across the lake.”

This is an interesting list. It is amazing how much some western towns have grown in the past 10 years. One town in Idaho grew by 62%!

Coopers Landing, Arkansas (#20 on the list) looks like the place to be. It looks like all 394 residents have a job. And with a 10 on Gun Laws, they are probably all pretty well armed so I wouldn’t mess with them!

Kodiak Alaska has a very high median income, the highest on the list. Brian you used to live up there, does 71 thousand not go very far?

Sounds like the Dakota’s are the place to be if you like hunting, fishing, low taxes and jobs!~

The economic impact of such a list would be DOUBLED if they used gender-neutral terminology and thus, included women too.
