Fox News host Bill O’Reilly: “I would have voted for Owens if I was up there.”

As if Republicans in NY-23 needed more trouble taking on Bill Owens.  Now comes this quote, in a largely glowing profile of the Plattsburgh Democrat in yesterday’s Watertown Daily Times.

Even Fox’s Mr. O’Reilly, who generally supports Republicans, admits his old classmate has some cross-party appeal.

“I would have voted for Owens if I was up there. He’s an honest guy,” Mr. O’Reilly said.

Turns out O’Reilly and Owens were classmates at an all-boy Catholic high school.   Read the full article here.

  1. If Clapton is God, Warren Haynes is Jesus says:

I like Bill Owens and will be voting for him again in November. I’ve heard nothing but glowing reviews from my Republican brethren who have worked alongside him on some local issues right here in Lewis County. He’s very bright, has a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit about him, and seems genuine to me.

  2. Paul says:

More “insane” comments from that crazy irrelevant Fox News that Brian had dismissed awhile back!

Is it so strange that a relatively moderate guy like Bill O’Reilly (or others) could support a moderate democrat like Bill Owens?

  3. Bill king says:

neo con republicans and liberal democrats embrace the same philosophy when it comes to how this country should operate. That is that majority rules. Which has gotten us to where we are today, on the brink. To make a long story short we are a republic not a democracy( democracies are as short in their lives as they are violent in their deaths). WE stopped understanding this a while ago. The constitution is the law of the land we need to elect people who believe that.

  4. donnie says:

Bill: Should we elect people who advocate repealing amendments to the Constitution?

  5. George Nagle says:

Bill, please expand on the difference between a republic and a democracy.

I simply don’t undersand what you feel is at issue here.

We are not a pure Athenian democracy, and that’s a good thing as the Athenians had the nasty habit of voting people to death. We’re a representative democracy, or at least I thought so, constrained by checks and balances, the Bill of Rights, and subsequent amendments.

  6. Brian says:

    George,
Democracy means rule by the people, either directly or through their elected representatives. A republic is a form of democracy; it is a subset of democracy.

The types of democracy are direct and indirect.

Examples of indirect (representative) democracy include constitutional monarchies and representative republics like ours. Examples of direct democracy include New England town meetings and binding referenda.

  7. George Nagle says:

Brian, you write “A republic is a form of democracy; it is a subset of democracy.” That’s what I think.

Bill wrote “we are a republic not a democracy” Bill contrasts the two. Other right of center writers have done so also, and I don’t know what they mean.

I would be happy if Bill were to expand his republic vs. democracy statement so I could know what he’s saying.

  8. Bret4207 says:

First off, we had the republic vs democracy debater a while back and the links provided laid it out plainly- we are a republic as intended by the Founders. The modern meanings are confused and inaccurate. If you really want to know the difference either do the research and read the arguments of the Founders yourself or at least google the definitions and see the differences, the nuance as Brian M calls it.

2- As another poster noted, now Fox is legitimate because one of their more liberal commentators likes your guy???? I won’t post the foul expletive that comes to mind, but it makes great fertilizer. Tommy Lee Jones supported Al Gore because they were college room mates. Thst is not an endorsement of his skills, that doing a pal a favor.

  9. It's All Bush's Fault says:

Fox is not legitimate. That was covered in the In Box a few weeks ago.

  10. Bret4207 says:

So if Fox is not legitimate then O’Reillys endorsement is meaningless, in fact it’s probably a reason to vote him out.
