I just ran into this old (2007) satire video. Sure, it’s funny, but like much good satire, the message is serious.
What do you think about the state of media right now? Is it as bad as all that? Worse? Better? Has the sheer number of news sources/blogs available online done enough heavy lifting to replace what big print and broadcast used to do? Where do you see the glimmer of hope?
Sad but funny and true.
Currently, I’d say none of the political ads and none of the polls should count as news. I wish no one would report on what the stock market is doing. If you must, why not add who the winners are for the day in Las Vegas.
Most of what the experts say about anything shouldn’t be news and I really don’t care who in the record or movie industry said or did what.
Hell, I’m old enough to remember when the evening news took up all of 15 minutes.
Well Pete, If you’re watching WWNY you take out sports and the ads, it takes less than 15 minutes. If you’re watching any of the major networks and take out the ads for prescription medications, it not much more than 15 minutes. Maybe 16, 16½.
Too many opinions and too much spin with every outlet. For example NPR is just like Fox with a different set of characters, although many of those characters now seem to be working for Fox.
Just report the news and let people decide for themselves.
Sensationalism and ratings rule the day. There are still intelligent commentators and guests, but they seem to be few and far between. I have to say some of the news-babes are pleasant to look at but only a few seem to have mush upstairs.
I grew up with Uncle Walther, Chet and David. The biggest difference between then and now is now we aren’t shy about questioning their slant and sources. You can watch Fox or MSNBC and see the same story reported in two different ways. Which is more accurate? I wonder if either really is anymore.
Whoops, much upstairs. Although, mush might apply to the others…
David:
This video is great! Thanks for posting it – a sad commentary on our society (and not just in the USA).
Bret, I think it is Uncle Walter. Uncle Walther is your NRA buddy.
Hasn’t everyone gotten rid of their TV already? It just makes you stupid.
Ah, me and my fat fingers. That or I write with a lisp.
TV makes you stupid? Have you looked at the internet or listened to the radio lately? TV isn’t alone.
David, that was beautiful. Thank you.
Maybe you mean:

I’ll date myself older than you. I remember Walter Winchell. No relation to Dave at the DEC but who knows? Only the Shadow knows.
