Same-sex marriage failed to pass New York’s Senate today by a wide margin 38-24.
Both North Country Senators, Darrel Aubertine (Democrat) and Betty Little (Republican) voted No.
It’s a fascinating issue here in the North Country, where all four Assembly members (Republican as well as Democratic) support gay marriage and see it as a civil right.
When I spoke to Betty Little yesterday, she called this a “difficult vote” and made it clear that her party had freed lawmakers to vote their consciences.
Little acknowledged some civil rights issues for gays and lesbians, but supported civil unions as a better remedy.
