Pataki out of Senate race, again

Most observers have been convinced for a while that former Governor George Pataki had little interest in challenging Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in this year’s Senate race.

The Wall Street Journal is adding another full stop to Republican hopes that Pataki would change his mind.

Former New York Republican Gov. George E. Pataki has decided not to mount an election challenge against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand this fall.

Instead, he said in an interview Tuesday that he would create a new national organization aimed at building support to repeal the recently enacted health-care overhaul.

Mr. Pataki’s decision to bypass the Senate race marks another major coup for Ms. Gillibrand, who has been enormously successful in knocking out competition on both sides of the aisle despite appearing to be vulnerable politically.

It’s a little difficult to understand the political identity that Pataki is carving in his post-gubernatorial phase.

He was viewed as a fairly big-spending, moderate Northeastern governor.

As governor, he boosted funding for everything from mental health programs to children’s health coverage and environmental land purchases.

Will there be an appetite among conservatives for a Pataki-led group organized to repeal the Democratic healthcare plan?

Your thoguhts welcome.

I've yet to understand the "hero worship" the former governor seems to garner in certain circles. While certainly not the only one to blame, he was certainly part of the problem that has plagued Albany for decades. Bloated budgets, over-taxation, back door deals, corruption, etc. Why would we want him in Washington?

Well, he's a very nice guy to talk to. Very personable, very warm. Just a nice person. I still wouldn't vote for him as a first choice. But having Chucky Schumers yes girl in Washington isn't doing us much good either.

Pataki needs to raise chickens, grow roses or do something – anything useful – and never be involved in politics again. He is boring. I rank him right down there with Silver and Lieberman for being boring.
