Plattsburgh Mayor Don Kasprzak says he won’t endorse Doheny or Hoffman in GOP primary

In an interview with NCPR, Plattsburgh’s Republican Mayor Don Kasprzak says he plans not to endorse either of the Republicans vying for the GOP vote in the NY-23 primary.

“I’ve been approached by both Republican candidates. I’m not saying my endorsement is all that important, I don’t know if I have all that much influence.  But they both have had discussions with me.  The bottom line in all of this is that I have my own campaign to worry about.  I’ve been telling people that I’m not sure I’m going to be directly involved in this [NY-23] campaign.”

Kasprzak also defended his willingness to publicly praise Rep. Bill Owens, the Democrat from Plattsburgh.

“I have always been very supportive of people who have helped the North Country, regardless of their party.  Even when I was on the [Plattsburgh] council from 1990-1994, some Republicans got upset that I worked with some Democrats and Independents, but I don’t have a problem with that…I’m not going to sit here and just criticize people if they’re Democrats.  I don’t do that.”

Good for him. The whole endorsement thing is a sham (though at least this guy lives in the district, unlike Hoffman’s celebrity backers). May the political elites just STFU and let the voters decide.
