Seaway could reopen tomorrow morning

Here’s a little update on the bunker fuel spill on the St. Lawrence Seaway near Montreal.

Seaway Management Corporation President Richard Corfe told CTV this morning that about 75 tons of fuel had leaked from the CSL Richelieu into the canal near the Cote St. Catherine lock.  He said crews would be skimming and vacuuming up oil “all day long” and leaned toward the lock re-opening tomorrow morning.

Watch the CTV’s interview with Corfe here.

I think the seaway should be permanently closed and dismantled. It has been nothing but an environmental disaster to the Great Lakes and tributary waters.

Amen! I don’t think it would right to ban ALL motorized traffic, but think how much nicer the river would be if you closed it to anything with a motor over 15HP.

Not too many years back, one of the most vocal ‘save the river’ ranters actually owned a marina and power boat business. Have you ever seen an outboard motor that didn’t create a sheen of the water?

I am sure our cars leave more polution in one year than a boater does by operating his boat the amount of times it is used during a season….that would mean break out the bikes and the sneakers guys. I agree ships should be monitored more closely and held accountable for for its contents and proceedures…but to ban water travel…..is a little to far!

  4. Change Is Here says:

Yes, a ban would be taking things a little too far. Perhaps, a six month moratorium would be more in line at this time.
