Well, that was quick

I hate writing about this, but it needs to be said:

Summer is beginning its long descent into fall.

[Insert groan here]

It hit me squarely today on my morning walk. The world just wasn’t as bright. The sun was at a lower angle.

This came up just a few days ago at one of our daily news meetings–attended by a few people who get up before the world starts (in this time zone, at any rate).

We all know what’s coming. But that’s not the point of this post. The point is to gather ye rosebuds, people. Carpe Diem. Or, if you prefer, as I saw on a sign in San Francisco: “Carpe Denim = Seize the Pants.” In our little patch of planet, maybe it should be “Carpe Carp.”

Whatever.

We still have lots of sunny, warm days ahead of us.

Savor them. Do what you need to get outside and make some happy memories.

Translation: turn off the TV (turn against it), stop surfing the web and surf the St Lawrence or the St Regis Canoe Area. Or simply get outside and bask in 80-degree afternoons.

It was the Roman poet Horace who gave us Carpe Diem. But the other part of his statement, rarely used, is just as important:

“Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future.”

The past is a collection of fragmented memories, and the future never really gets here; it’s always the present.

    Enjoy it.

I am choosing to remain in denial that summer is starting is downward turn. To me, there are still many days left of paddling, swimming, hiking, sipping gin & tonics, finishing the work on my MG so I can get it out in the summer air, etc, etc, etc. Only until I see the first snow flakes will I accept that summer is over… and then I’ll just start looking forward to skiing. I just wish this going-to-work nonsense didn’t keep getting in the way!
