Trudeau Institute raises possibility of leaving Saranac Lake

Hard to imagine more frightening news for Saranac Lake than this report in today’s Adirondack Daily Enterprise, by reporter Chris Knight:

An internal memo written by David L. Woodland, the Institute’s president and director, lists “relocation, with the intent of repurposing the Saranac Lake facilities” as one of the strategic options being considered for Trudeau’s future development.

Expansion of the Institute’s current facilities on the shore of Lower Saranac Lake and creating a secondary site are also named as options in the memo, which was distributed to all Trudeau staff Oct. 28.

When I suggested this as a possibility in some earlier comments I was almost attacked for suggesting that this could ever happen. It is just the nature of what they do. Trudeau was built in Saranac Lake because that is where the patients were. Just like SL attracted loggers because it had the trees. I suspect that the discovery that antibiotics could kill TB was the moment that Saranac Lake may have died as a “scientific” town. Brian remember your blog “is SL a dying town”? I hope they go with the plan to expand in SL and have a sister site somewhere else.

I would hope that the leaders and concerned citizens of Saranac Lake would mobilize ASAP to try and keep this fine institution here in the North Country. Which might be exactly what the Trudeau Institute is hoping for. A show of support for an expansion given the trying economic times and the recent lack of financial support for NCCC. Whatever the reason, I hope all parties involved can find a way to keep Trudeau right where it is.

Another example of heartless big Pharm/Med at work? Funny, they’re the salt of the earth until the figure out NY is a really bad place to try and do business.

Where is Gary Trudeau when you need him?
Doesn’t he need the institute to stay in Saranac Lake for him comic strip?

Geez you guys have no idea what your talking about. First, SL was a TB patient treatment center for decades. But E.L. Trudeau’s real interest was research. Besides the San we had the Saranac Laboratory. The Trudeau Institute is the legacy of the Saranac Laboratory not the San.

Second, Trudeau Institute is a non-profit, private basic medical research institute that has zero to do with “big Pharm/Med). The business climate of NY affects it almost not at all as far as I can tell. In fact, Trudeau Inst. has received millions in research funds from NY state thanks to Sen. Stafford. There is even a wing at Trudeau named after Stafford.

Trudeau receives the majority of its funding from the NIH followed by private donations. I think they are becoming interested in getting income from patenting vaccines or treatment for humans. To do this you need access to a major medical center that is set up for human experimentation. There is no reason the basic research institute has to be located near the medical center.
