Yes! We have a new pm news host!

You dedicated Inbox readers are getting the news first…

We’re excited to announce that we’ve hired Nora Flaherty as our new All Before Five host!  She’ll also report regularly for The 8 O’Clock Hour and, of course, online at ncpr.org.

Nora comes to us most recently from New York City, where she has worked as a program host and producer at public radio station WFUV.  Nora has a great voice, a nose for news as well as the quirky side of life, and she tells compelling stories.  Listen to a couple of her stories here and here.  We think you’ll love her.

Nora will begin work mid-April, so don’t expect All Before Five to return before May.  But it’s awesome to finally have a point on the horizon to look towards.

Here’s more of Nora’s bio:

Nora Flaherty got into public radio kind of by mistake—the local public radio station was in the same building as the office of the Anthropology department at the University of Michigan, where Nora was studying to be a professor. But after a few weeks as an intern, she was convinced she’d stumbled into the right place. Nora became a reporter and on-air host at Michigan Radio, where she did stories on environmental issues, housing, the arts, among other things. Nora moved to New York City in 2005, and became a producer at WFUV. At WFUV, Nora hosted a weekly interview program and reported on the long-term issues faced by September 11th survivors, education, and less serious topics like fairy tales, freak shows and pop music. A serious dog person, Nora loves hanging out with her “pack” (her husband and their dog), cooking, and driving in foreign countries.

All the best, Nora, and welcome to the North Country. If you like driving in a foreign country, well, there’s one just half an hour north of where you will be working. And we have pretty good roads!

“Nora has…a nose for…the quirky side of life…” The quirky side, David? That sounds promising! Quirky — Well, we do have This American Life, A Way with Words, TTBOOK and Radio Bob; but not Joe Frank, Word Jazz, Le Show, On the Media, or Sound Opinions. We can’t have everything, so more locally-produced quirkiness would be just so sweet. I listened to both of those Environment Report clips and Nora sounds perfect. I’m looking forward to her presence!

Rocking! Like NCPR, WFUV is an awesome station so I’m sure Nora is a great addition to the staff.

I just returned from a trip to Colorado. One day while driving around I heard a familiar voice on the radio and thought “it’s later than I thought, I’d better look for somewhere to stay for the night.” Then I realized it wasn’t 4:45 but it was Jonathan Brown. Funny how we become accustomed to routine.

  10. Ronald Berry says:

Great voice indeed! Welcome, Nora. It will be nice to have you on board.

How excellent to have you and your pack here, Nora! As I’m sure you already know, you’re joining an exceptional radio station, whose staff and programs are essential components of North Country life for many of us. Wishing you a warm (and it WILL get warm here eventually!) North Country welcome, and very much looking forwar to meeting all three of you!

  12. This is great news — Nora’s reports sound great and I’m surely not alone in welcoming her to the Frigid North! (those icy canyons in NYC can be pretty cold too though) Best wishes, Nora…the North Country is a really great place to be able to live well. Chelle
