Canada Post strike update

This won’t affect most readers. But if you send mail to (or expect anything from) Canada, be aware that you may experience delays or disruptions.

Postal workers began striking at Canada Post on June 2nd, largely over disputes about a modernization plan. Here’s the union’s web page on strike issues and developments.

Initially, just one city was targeted for work-stoppages per day, with Winnipeg being the first. Montreal’s ‘turn’ came on Monday. Meanwhile, it’s been business as usual everywhere not targeted for 24-hour action.

Wednesday, both sides kicked it up a notch. The union’s one-city-per-day tactic was expanded to more than a dozen across the country. And Canada Post (or management, as those terms go) announced that as of next week Monday, mail in all urban centers will only be delivered on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, a cost-cutting move in response to reduced volume. These steps will likely slow things down across the whole system.

According to the CBC’s FAQ page for this topic,

the last time Canada Post workers went on strike was in 1997. The government of the day forced an end to the strike with back-to-work legislation after about two weeks.

Here is Canada Post’s customer information hub with more about how and where service may be affected.

I get my checks in the mail like always when in middle of moving from one place to another and now I have been waiting for my checks to get sorted out and my travel grants as well to be delivered… My child is going hungry and all due to red tape… I am rashening my food till the day comes I can once again get my checks back in my Mail box… I know Direct Deposit is the thing these days but I still believe in the Mail system to deliver Rain, sleet, snow, or even through the toughest negotiations… Get on the Job someone and help get things back in running order gezh
