Morning Read: A fall mosquito season?

The Plattsburgh Press Republican is reporting that the North Country faces a rare, end-of-summer swarm of mosquitoes.  Amy Ivy, with Cornell Cooperative Extension, tells the paper that lots of water and humid weather are to blame.

“I can tell you that people from all over the area are talking about it,” said Amy Ivy, executive director and horticulture educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Plattsburgh.

“I think it’s all the moisture we’ve gotten, then it got warm and the two combined to hatch all the mosquitoes.”

Well, at least there’s one good reason to look forward to the first hard frost.  What are you seeing?  Bugs and more bugs in your part of the North Country?

Yes, my wife and I were surprised by a few little biters on the Raquette River yesterday afternoon. At least they’re not black flies.

I was bitten last night in Ray Brook (but I got her).

  3. The gnats are terrible in Glens Falls — swarms. Working in the garden over the weekend, I had to smear myself with bug dope, a first for September.

Come to Hamilton County. Two recent hikes in the Moose River Plains and the Blue Mnt. Wild Forest without seeing any mosquetoes or any other bugs.
    Still haven’t seen a moose.

This article has some interesting stuff. It looks like some other places hit by Irene are dealing with mosquito problems:

If climate change starts leading to bugs some people may start to come around. If it makes for a better ski season I tend to be less receptive!

Just be thankful you don’t live at my place in northern Thailand. I’d kill for a mosquito-free season, but we get it all year round :(
