Update: Conservatives will spend half a milion dollars attacking Murphy

In Capital Confidential today – the Times-Union’s blog — political reporter Jimmy Vielkind reports that a conservative senior citizens group called 60 Plus will buy $550,000 worth of ads attacking Rep. Scott Murphy (D-Glens Falls).

“Scott Murphy is not listening to New York’s seniors,” said Jim Martin, Chairman of 60 Plus.  “His vote for ObamaCare will raise taxes in New York, cut $500 billion from the Medicare budget, and reduce the quality of health care for America’s Greatest Generation.  Scott Murphy didn’t listen to seniors during his appointment to the U.S. House of Representatives, but he will have to listen when they say ‘you’re fired’ at the ballot box this November.”

That’s a lot of air time and it suggests just how fiercely contested these North Country districts will be.  Here’s a response from the Murphy campaign:

“The proponents of privatizing social security are making their voices heard loud and clear.  With more than $1.1 million in ad buys, and a series of donations and fundraisers, they are throwing their full weight behind Chris Gibson to attack Scott Murphy,” said Murphy spokesperson Josh Schwerin.  “Scott will continue to stand up to these special interests to defend seniors, keep Social Security strong, and fight against privatization, which would reduce guaranteed benefits and add two trillion dollars to the deficit.”

I got a letter from my health insurance company telling me the “trend” is for health insurance to increase by about 12% to 15% and that health insurance reform will add 2.5% to that.

The 2.5% I can handle; add it to a “reasonable” 4% to 6% increase every year and I might consider that okay. As it is there will come a time in the very near future when I will have to drop my health insurance coverage.

Let’s hope that the health-care bill will be improved enough by then to allow a buy-in to a government plan.

I don’t trust the Republicans. If they get in they will try to scrap health-care reform and the insurance companies will be back to jacking up rates by 25% or more.

Vote for Scott Murphy for REAL JOB CREATION! He’s helped REAL small businesses in this district, like the Glens Falls Chocolate Mill. Scott Murphy for Congress in 2010!
